Alzheimer's and Dementia In-home care

In-home Alzheimer's and Dementia Care

Although there is no specific treatment for Alzheimer's disease, there are measures that can be taken to provide an Alzheimer's patient with the care they need.  Often times, treating an underlying condition that is contributing to mental decline can sometimes bring improvement to Alzheimer's patients. For example, many Alzheimer's patients suffer from depression or delusions that compound their memory impairment, leading to a condition known as an excess disability state, in which the patient is doing worse than normally would be expected. Treating the depression may bring about improvement, even though the Alzheimer's itself is unchanged.

How our caregivers can help?

  • When care is being administered at home, modifying the environment can reduce certain stresses for both the patient and caregiver.
  • Keep the home uncluttered to improve safety and to make things as simple as possible.
  • be sure that needed objects are always kept in the same place, so that the patient does not need to learn anything new.
  • Doors and windows should be kept locked to prevent roaming.
  • we recommend that every Alzheimer's patient should wear an identification bracelet indicating huis or her condition, name, address and phone number.
  • Be patient and recognize that when the patient is acting stubborn or combative, it is the brain damage that is causing the problem.
  • recognize that as the disease progresses, the patient will require increasing help and  support in performing simple tasks.
  • We try to establish routines that encourage self care.
  • lay out appropriate clothing and provide foods that are easy to eat.
